Riga Sekander arrived in the U.S. as a refugee from Afghanistan. She put herself through school and became an electronic engineer. After 23 years, it was time for a change. “That’s when I got into fashion design,” Sekander explains. “I started my first store in Laguna Beach. The weather brought me to the desert.” Ten years later, she hasn’t looked back. Sourcing unique apparel has Sekander traveling the globe, and she’s developed a passion for distinctive design.
I believe in finding solutions, finding the best quality for the buck, having the uniqueness and edginess of the design — something to hold on to forever and love it as much as you did the first day that you bought it. I travel the world to make that happen.
I honestly don’t know what to say. I’ve been working in my store every day since Aug. 22, 2006. Nonstop. That’s how I indulge myself — I think my work is play.
FAVORITE ITEM IN STORE:
This might sound very cheesy and cliche, but I truly love every single piece that I bring into the store. That’s the philosophy of my buying. I only buy the things that I’m absolutely in love with. If I could, I would keep everything for myself, but I can’t afford that.
EL PASEO HANGOUTS:
I love going to Si Bon. It’s not on El Paseo, but nearby. I love going to different clothing stores; I like the variety. I would love to see El Paseo being totally filled up with smaller stores again.
