Michelle Whittaker has been in the fashion industry for 23 years. She’s owned edgy, vintage boutiques in cities along the Southern California coast. When she returned to her childhood stomping grounds of Palm Springs in 1999 to start a family of her own, Whittaker says she “decided to slow down with just one store.” In 2003, she opened blonde with her mom, Virginia Fradkin. After stints in Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage, for three years the pair has called El Paseo home.
We are family-owned and run, and I think people appreciate that. Every time customers come in, the same people are working here — and probably remember what’s in their closet better than they do.
I am a denim girl through and through. Ripped jeans, white T-shirt, and great jewelry; you can’t go wrong.
We work with a few great jewelers out of L.A. who do custom pieces for us. Diamonds go with everything!
FAVORITE ITEM IN STORE:
My favorite items also tend to be the ones we can’t keep in. Citizens of Humanity jeans are a must. I also can’t live without Skull Cashmere; we can’t keep this line in stock. They outdid themselves this year.
EL PASEO HANGOUTS:
My favorite lunch spot is Thai Smile, but you can’t beat the martinis at Mastro’s.
